2025 is the International Year of Quantum Science and Engineering. Quantum research and innovation are truly global efforts. While these feature only a small sample of the places where conversations and learning about quantum happen, these postcards from HQI Blog contributors and their colleagues showcase where research and study have taken them in the past year.
Postcard Transcript: Hello from London, UK! I am presently at ICAP (International Conference of Atomic Physics). I have had a blast learning about the work that our colleagues are engaged in. This ICAP there were many talks on trapped ions/neutral atoms for quantum simulation and table-top AOM experiments to study fundamental physics. I also had the opportunity to visit Trafalgar Square and see the Imperial measures—the official definition of the yard (3ft) from 1838-1959. - Yi
Postcard Transcript: Ciao from Italy! I'm here for a summer school on computing & simulation with atoms. I learned that the highly excited Rydberg atoms I use in lab are called 'atomi ciccioni' which means 'ultrafat atoms' in Italian. [Smiling atom sketch] - Haley, G1, Semeghini Group
Postcard Transcript: To HQI Blog, I just went to Göttingen, Germany for a school on nonergodic quantum dynamics. I didn't realize how many famous scientists lived and worked there: Born, Heisenberg, Noether, Hilbert, Planck, and more! I got to see some of their graves while I was there. Definitely worth going to Göttingen! - Nik O. Gjonbalaj, G3, Yelin Group
Postcard Transcript: Hello! I am currently at the APS Global Physics Summit on Anaheim, CA! It's one of the largest physics conferences in the world with over 15,000 attendees! I also had the chance to present my research! - Albert
Postcard transcript: Greetings from Florence, Italy! I came here to attend a workshop on "Quantum Simulation with Ultracold Atoms" and also had the chance to visit some cool labs at LENS (European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy). I learned that physicists here are getting precision-machined parts from the Ferrari factory—arguable the best in Italy! - Youqi
Text transcript: Hey HQI Blog!!! It's a rainy but beautiful day here in Japan [two smiling face emojis]. The conference ended yesterday so a couple of us went to visit the Gōtokuji Cat temple [black cat emoji] It's definitely a great way to unwind after a few days of intense physics talks and poster presenting. I got to talk about my high pressure quantum sensing project and visit some cool microscopy labs! - Esther
